The One Decision That Reveals Whether You’re Wise… or Walking Into Disaster

Proverbs 9:6-10 is one of Scripture’s clearest invitations to choose a path…not just a belief, not just a feeling, but a direction of life. The passage reads:

“Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

The opening command, “Forsake the foolish, and live,” is not merely a warning…it is a lifeline. Scripture ties your spiritual vitality to the company you keep. Foolishness is contagious, corrosive, and spiritually suffocating. God’s remedy is decisive separation: walk away from the voices that drag you downward, and walk toward the voices that lead you upward. Life is found on the path of understanding, not the path of chaos.

Verses 7 and 8 expose a painful but liberating truth: not everyone can be corrected. A scorner…someone who mocks truth, mocks correction, and mocks God…will not only reject reproof but will turn on the one who offers it. Trying to correct a hardened heart only invites shame, hostility, and unnecessary wounds. God is not telling you to give up on people; He is telling you to stop pouring wisdom into those who have no intention of receiving it.

But the contrast is beautiful: “rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.” The wise are not wise because they know everything…they are wise because they are teachable. Correction is not an insult to them; it is a gift. They see reproof as a tool that sharpens them, not a threat that diminishes them. This is one of the clearest spiritual diagnostics in Scripture: your reaction to correction reveals your spiritual condition.

Verse 9 deepens the theme: wisdom compounds. The wise become wiser. The just increase in learning. Growth is not accidental; it is the result of humility, openness, and a heart that welcomes truth even when it stings.

Then comes the foundation of the entire passage…and of all true wisdom: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Reverence for God is not terror; it is surrender. It is the recognition that God is God and you are not. It is the willingness to let His Word define reality, identity, morality, and destiny. Without this posture, wisdom is impossible. With it, everything else begins to fall into place.

Finally, “the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” True understanding is not merely intellectual; it is relational. To know God…His holiness, His character, His ways…is to see life clearly. Wisdom is not found in self-discovery but in God-discovery.

This passage is an invitation: choose the path of wisdom, walk with the teachable, and anchor your life in the fear of the Lord.

With all of the above in consideration, it means little without this:

In Ephesians 1:13 the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul declares that men are saved and sealed by hearing and BELIEVING the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your Salvation. Therefore, here, now, is declared unto you the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your Salvation: “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. BELIEVE today. The time is short.
