The Proof: Genuine Obedience
The differentiating factor between the saved and the shocked is not fervor, but fruit. Jesus states the requirement clearly: “…but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” True faith is obedience-shaped. We must be very careful here: Jesus is not teaching salvation by works. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). However, a saving faith is never alone. It necessarily creates a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) with a new desire to honor and submit to the Father’s commands. Obedience is not the root of salvation; it is the inevitable fruit. Those who claim Jesus as Lord but live in consistent, unrepentant disobedience to His Father’s revealed will are deluding themselves.
The Shock: The Reliance on Performance
The tragedy intensifies in verse 22. On Judgment Day, “many” will stand before the King and plead their case. Their defense is not their character, their love, or their dependence on Christ’s sacrifice. Their defense is their resume. “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?”
These are not lukewarm believers; they are spiritual superstars! Prophesying, casting out demons, performing miracles…these are powerful, high-profile acts of ministry done ostensibly “in His name.” Their religious activity is stunning. They trust in their performance for God, assuming that because God used them to benefit others, they must be secure.
The Verdict: “I Never Knew You”
Jesus’ final response is utterly devastating: “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not deny their “wonderful works.” He doesn’t say, “You didn’t do those things.” He says, “I never knew you.”
The issue is relationship, not religion. The Greek ginosko implies intimate, relational, covenant knowledge…the kind a shepherd has for his sheep (John 10:14). Jesus isn’t saying He lacks intellectual awareness of their existence. He is saying they were never His. Despite their flashy “ministry,” their daily lives were characterized by “iniquity”…lawlessness, or living as if God’s commands did not apply to them. Their public “Lord, Lord” was a masquerade covering private disobedience. They trusted their works for Christ, but they never truly surrendered to Christ in a relationship of trusting obedience.
This passage calls us all to examine the foundation of our assurance. Are we relying on our religious performance, or are we known by the King because we are surrendered to His will?
