President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that conservative commentator Scott Jennings is a “good option” to replace outgoing press secretary Karoline Leavitt after the CNN contributor jumped to support the administration in a media storm over the president’s top aide, Natalie Harp.
Trump was asked about possible candidates to take on Leavitt’s role, who is exiting to spend more time with her children. While seeming to be joking as he pointed to reporters in the press pool who could take on Leavitt’s duties, Trump was asked about Jennings.
“Scott Jennings is good,” Trump said, not clarifying if he was truly considering Jennings for the role.
Jennings has spent the last week posing as an attack dog for the White House after Harp became the center of attention following Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) mentioning the president’s close aide during a rally in Atlanta.
“He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar,” Ossoff said, referring to Harp.
Jennings then used his airtime on CNN to defend Harp, calling Ossoff a “coward” for “dragging an unknown woman, who’s gone off to serve her government, through the mud, insinuating that the only possible reason she could have a job in politics is because she’s a concubine for a politician.”
Jennings also fired off opinions on the matter during his radio show and in social media posts, which came off to political spectators as Jennings jockeying for Leavitt’s position.
WHEN PUNDITS RETURN TO THE WHITE HOUSE: THE SCOTT JENNINGS PRECEDENT
Politico’s Dasha Burns reported that Jennings caught the attention of some White House officials. A source familiar with White House operations told the outlet that Jennings set up a meeting with chief of staff Susie Wiles.
There has been little movement on replacing Leavitt, and Jennings has not commented on whether he is seeking the role.
