Vice President JD Vance joined President Donald Trump in urging Republicans to link the SAVE America Act to renewal of a key spy program that has stalled in the Senate.
“Why don’t we try and at least force people to vote against it?” Vance said at a Thursday press briefing at the White House.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to veto a deal to extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act unless the election bill is attached, but Senate Republicans view the demand as a nonstarter given Democratic opposition and an unwillingness on their part to eliminate the filibuster.
In response to that pushback, Vance replied, “One of the things that sometimes frustrates me about the legislative process is that people will go into it saying, ‘This isn’t possible, therefore we’re not even going to try.’”
Vance served for two years in the Senate before his election as vice president.
“Let’s actually see,” Vance said. “Let’s try it, and if it’s not possible, then let the people put their name on it. This is also good for the American people. How many American senators know that the American people love the SAVE America Act because they believe in voter ID, but how many of those same senators don’t want to vote for it because they know that the radical elements within their own party would punish them for it?”

The Senate voted on the SAVE America Act, a bill to require voter ID and proof of citizenship when registering to vote, as recently as this month, with four Republicans joining Democrats to help defeat it. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) set in motion an extended period of debate on the legislation earlier in the year, but that debate was shelved as lawmakers shifted to the Iran war and other priorities.
