The White House cast a little shade at the House Oversight Committee Friday after committee members engaged in a heated verbal altercation during a hearing the previous evening.
Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) interrupted the proceedings and exchanged a number of barbs attacking each other’s appearances.
Greene suggested that Crockett was having trouble reading past her “fake eyelashes,” and, shortly after, Crockett responded by alluding to Greene’s “bleach blonde, bad-built, butch body.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) demanded that Greene apologize, which she refused.
“Are your feelings hurt?” Greene taunted.
“Oh girl, oh baby girl, don’t even play,” the “Squad” member shot back.
Reporters asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the incident during Friday’s briefing, and though she declined to comment directly, Jean-Pierre did invoke President Joe Biden‘s lengthy congressional career.
“As someone who was a senator for 36 years, he believed that people should respect each other, treat each other with dignity and civility,” she responded simply. “I think you have to treat people with dignity, you have to treat people with respect. It is important to do that because you are there to work on behalf of the American people.”
Earlier in the day, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed displeasure with the way all parties acted during the hearing.
“It was not a good look for Congress,” he told reporters. “We all, I think, need to control the emotions better and get the job done.”
“I think the decorum in the House is an important tradition to maintain,” Johnson continued. “So we’ll be talking about that with our members. I think Hakeem Jeffries needs to do the same on the Democrat side.”
