Dime a Dozen Big Talking “Celebrity” Pastors vs. True Shepherds

Seems everyone today who CALLS themselves a pastor talks a big game. Some are good. Some are bad. But what separates the good ones from the bad ones? The answer might shock you.

And Paul gives a warning before he even explains it. The Apostle Paul writes: “I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.” 1 Corinthians 4:14

What is Paul warning us about? Pastors who talk BIG GAME but are derelict in their duty.

Preaching a dynamic sermon is NOT the thing you look for. In fact, Paul says those pastors are a dime a dozen. The very next verse tells us:

“For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.” 1 Corinthians 4:15

There it is. Being a polished speaker helps a pastor, but people don’t just need instructors. People need fathers in Christ.

You can have a pastor who can preach an amazing sermon… but ask yourself: Are they a father to their flock? Do they shepherd their flock like a loving father, encourage, exhorts and helps their son through dark times?

Some pastors have their own church members sitting in jail for crimes. Some have church members with mugshots online. Some pastors themselves get caught in public scandals.

Yet they are the most articulate, emotional, and polished speakers.

But Paul said that is NOT what the church needs. We have THOUSANDS of instructors in Christ. But not many fathers.

Avoid the pastors who are preachers… but not papas.

And here’s the part nobody wants to talk about:

These “preacher‑stars” often live well, while the true shepherds, the “fathers in Christ,” labor about quietly, sacrificially, and usually without the honor or support they deserve. Paul’s whole point was that the Corinthians were celebrating the wrong men. They were funding the instructors while neglecting the father who actually birthed them in the gospel.

Support your real shepherds. The ones who show up. The ones who care. The ones who father the flock.

A Final Word of Hope:

Ephesians 1:13 gives a powerful promise: You are saved and securely sealed the very moment you hear and believe the word of truth the good news of your salvation.

That same message of truth is available to you right now:

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3–4

Choose to believe this today. Life moves fast and there is no better time to find that security than right now.
