Phil Mickelson entered treatment facility for ‘family trauma and addiction,’ representative says

LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson recently entered a treatment facility and has since left, according to a report Wednesday from TMZ Sports.

“Phil was seeking treatment for family trauma and addiction,” a representative for the six-time major champion told the outlet.

The report did not identify the specific addiction or provide details about how long he stayed.

Mickelson, 56, has played in just one LIV Golf event this year, in South Africa in March. He withdrew from the Masters in April and later pulled out of the PGA Championship.

In an April 2 statement, Mickelson said he would be away from competitive golf for “an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter.”

Mickelson previously discussed gambling addiction

In a September 2023 post, Mickelson announced that he would not bet on football that season after crossing from moderation into addiction.

He said gambling had damaged his relationships with loved ones and credited his wife, Amy, with helping him through his recovery. Mickelson described spending years getting professional help and working to repair the harm he had caused.

“You’re here but you’re not with us” was something he said he had often heard during his addiction.

A month before that post, Mickelson had responded to allegations in a book by Billy Walters about his betting habits. He denied betting on the Ryder Cup and said therapy had helped him.

The representative’s statement Wednesday did not say whether Mickelson’s recent treatment was related to gambling.

In June, Golf Digest reported that a female employee at The Farms Golf Club near San Diego accused Mickelson of inappropriate physical contact.

The club said it investigated the allegation and confirmed Mickelson was no longer a member. His attorney, Tom Clare, said Mickelson had resigned.

In a June 29 statement responding to a Skratch report about misconduct allegations, a spokesperson told PEOPLE that some claims were false and others concerned mistakes Mickelson had already acknowledged.

“Mr. Mickelson’s priority is to become the husband, father, and man his family deserves,” the representative said.
