Tech Giants Finally Fix the AI Water Crisis Just in Time for Boomers to Start Trusting It?

AI Adoption and Advancements for the Boomer Generation

The perception that older adults avoid technology is quickly becoming outdated. Daily interaction with technology among this demographic is consistent and practical, with apps and digital services being woven into their daily routines. For example, adults 50 and over use about 14 digital services and 10 apps in a three-month period for everything from navigation to entertainment. Texting has even become the preferred communication method over email.

Interest in AI tools is also rising rapidly among older adults. According to a 2026 AARP report, AI usage in this demographic nearly doubled from 2024 to 2025, reaching roughly 30%. The most appealing AI categories for older adults are voice personal assistants and health-focused AI tools that help with health monitoring or provide wellness guidance.

However, there is still a “trust gap” to overcome. The EY AI Sentiment Index (EY 2026) revealed that older generations have a lower comfort level with AI; baby boomers and the silent generation scored 55 and 45 out of 100, respectively, compared to higher scores for Gen Z and Millennials. Concerns regarding data privacy and security continue to be the primary factors slowing the adoption of new technologies among older adults.

 

AI Data Center Construction and Local Water Usage

The massive expansion of AI infrastructure in 2026 has brought the environmental impact of data centers into sharp focus, particularly their water and power usage. AI data centers face growing protests over water, electricity, and land use across the U.S.

Traditionally, data centers have relied on evaporative cooling systems (cooling towers) that consume large amounts of fresh water by evaporating it into the atmosphere to remove heat. This older model meant that the harder chips worked to train AI models, the more water was wasted.

To address these resource limitations, the industry is shifting its focus from just Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE). Data center operators are moving away from open evaporation methods and adopting sophisticated closed-loop technologies.

 

Key advancements in 2026 include:

  • Closed-Loop Liquid Cooling: Systems that recirculate the same water throughout operation, rather than relying on continuous fresh water consumption. For example, Microsoft’s Fairwater facility in Wisconsin uses a vertical, two-story design with a closed-loop system that only requires the cooling loop to be filled once. Microsoft claims these new AI data centers use only as much water annually as a single neighborhood restaurant. Oracle is also deploying closed-loop cooling methods in its upcoming AI data centers in New Mexico, Michigan, Texas, and Wisconsin.
  • Membrane Technology: This new standard uses semi-permeable membranes that separate water from the airflow. Heat escapes as microscopic water vapor, but liquid water is retained and reused. This technology can cut water usage by up to 90% compared to conventional systems and operates optimally even in high-humidity tropical environments.
  • Hybrid Cooling Architectures: Future data centers are expected to use a combination of technologies, such as closed cold-water cycles on the roof (using membrane systems) paired with Fan Walls and Direct-to-Chip (DTC) cooling inside the server room. DTC involves attaching cooling plates directly to high-power AI chips.
  • AI-Driven Thermal Management: AI is being introduced to cool AI data centers. These systems continuously monitor workload conditions and automatically adjust cooling output, making the process dynamic rather than static.

The physical transformation of data centers in 2026 aims to decouple computing growth from natural resource consumption, attempting to make these facilities “environmentally invisible”.
