Often, it comes cloaked in intellectualism or emotional appeals that sound righteous but lack biblical substance. In his second letter to Timothy, he prophesied about a future where believers would willingly abandon truth for comfortable lies. He warns in 2 Timothy chapter 4, verses 3 and 4, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” When Christians are not grounded in the Bible, they become susceptible to these “fables.” They seek out teachings that validate their own desires rather than submitting to the transformative truth of the gospel.
The defense against this spiritual instability is intentional grounding. Paul exhorts the church in Colossians chapter 2, verses 6 through 8: “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” A tree with deep roots cannot be easily uprooted by a passing storm. Similarly, a Christian who is heavily rooted in the doctrines of Christ cannot be spoiled by the vain deceit of worldly philosophies.
The ultimate goal of Paul’s warning is not merely to create defensive theologians, but to cultivate mature believers who reflect the character of Christ. Immediately following his warning about being tossed by every wind of doctrine, Paul provides the solution in Ephesians 4:15, urging believers to “speak the truth in love” so they “may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.” Spiritual maturity requires a steady diet of the Word of God. Without it, the believer remains a vulnerable child, easily manipulated by the cunning craftiness of men. The mandate remains clear for Christians today: study the scriptures, establish deep spiritual roots, and hold fast to sound doctrine.
And here is the most important message: The Gospel of the LORD Jesus Christ…
In Ephesians 1:13 the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul declares that men are saved and sealed by hearing and BELIEVING the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your Salvation. Therefore, here, now, is declared unto you the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your Salvation: “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. BELIEVE today. The time is short.
